Its shape imitates the cylindrical (so-called elephant leg) vase of late Ming Dynasty – early Qing Dynasty (around mid 17th century); its motifs (fish and seaweeds) are very popular during Ming Dynasty, expressing the wish for prosperity (fish is pronounced Yu that also mean surplus; and many fish express Lien Lien Yiu Yu = wishing you have surplus every year).  During early Republic period (ca. 1920 to 1930) many porcelain artists painted fish with colophons that expressing the freedom and pleasure that fish enjoy in water.   The artist chose the very best cobalt blue that pure blue, very intense but has no black tint.  Further most of the colors are underglaze, which more durable and elegant, but difficult to make. Signed and dated by the artist.
