Old Royal Thai Palace Solid Bronze Lions

Old Royal Thai Palace solid bronze lions  These majestic antique lions are made by old foundry techniques and are almost of solid bronze and extremely heavy for the sizes, weighing 4238 and 3613 g respectively. This solid molding method is quite different from bronze statue making of ancient China that use inner mold to create hollow and light statues. The mane, the chest and part of the legs are delicately decorated with gold. The lions’ faces are stern and serene. The details of the eyes, eye brows, and claws are well-carved, illustrating the elegance of old day artworks in Southeast Asia.

Size: 29 (L) x 20 (H), x 15 (W) cm.

Provenance: From Dr. Robert I-San Lin Collection, whose grandfather was a major antique dealer during late Qing-early Republic; brought to California in 1960s.  Dr. Lin’s biography published in Journal of Artworks Authentication, ISSN 2095 - 9109.  2015, vol. 6.
