Lot: 162 Kangxi Polychrome (Wucai) Brush Holder Qing Dynasty, Kangxi Period Style This is a rare early Kangxi polychrome (Wucai) brush holder, and it is decorated with a scene of scholars viewing a painting. The small figures have clearly painted facial features. The body is made of white, very fine, high density clay. The circular foot rim is a very broad jade bi-like foot, a form that existed primarily during the early Kangxi period. The white glaze is somewhat milky, and has a greenish tint without the glossy shine of newly fired porcelains, likely from the inherent process of aging (350 years). The blue underglaze has a grayish tint and the aubergine enamel is iridescent, with a mother of pearl-like reflection. All these features are typical for early Kangxi period. PROVENANCE: Dr. Robert I. Lin, brought to California from Taiwan in 1960s.
