A Blue and White Dragon Lidded Container and Lid with Xuande Mark

The main body of this blue and white container is decorated with 2 five claw dragons between splashing waves. The dome shaped lid is also decorated with dragons amongst clouds, an auspicious symbol of rain and fertility, good fortune and happiness. Dragons have many meanings including symbolizing the Emperor, the Son of Heaven, eternity, Yang and Yin, male vigor and fertility. The motif of the five clawed dragon has its origins in Ming dynasty (1368–1644) when it was used an Imperial symbol in various art forms and decorations. The body of the vase is flanked with a pair of elephant head handles and the body is inscribed with a large six character Xuande reign mark. Size: 20 1/2 in. (52 cm.) h x 12 1/2 in. (32 cm.) dia.
